Project Launch

The Governor of Daraa announced via his account on the X platform the commencement of the first phase of an industrial city project in the Al-Najeeh area of Daraa Governorate. The announcement coincides with ongoing rehabilitation works at the old Daraa customs facility, reflecting a broader development agenda for the governorate.

Economic Objectives

The planned industrial city is envisioned as a new economic driver for Daraa Governorate. Its stated objectives include expanding investment opportunities and creating employment for local residents. The project also aims to reposition Daraa on Syria's economic map as an integrated agricultural and industrial center.

Location and Context

The Al-Najeeh area has been selected as the site for the industrial city, a location considered suitable for hosting a range of industrial facilities. The project forms part of a wider effort to rebuild the governorate's economic infrastructure in the post-conflict period.

Parallel Development Initiatives

The industrial city project runs in parallel with the rehabilitation of the old Daraa customs facility, indicating a coordinated approach to economic development across the governorate. The source did not disclose specific timelines, technical specifications, or details regarding subsequent implementation phases.

Correction — 2026-07-27

The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported on 27 July 2026 that a government delegation from the Ministry of Public Works and Housing, the Regional Planning Commission and the Ministry of Economy discussed the siting of the Daraa industrial city, and that the Al-Najeeh area had been selected as the preliminary site after several locations were assessed against technical criteria covering land use, availability of labour and proximity to transport networks, with detailed studies to begin in the coming phase.

Imad al-Masri, Deputy Minister of Public Works and Housing, and Mazen al-Khayrat, Deputy Governor of Daraa for investment affairs, took part in the meeting, within a wider development plan covering the governorates of Daraa, Sweida and Quneitra across industry, agriculture, tourism, trade, education and health.
