Abu Rasin is a small town in north-eastern Syria and the administrative centre of the sub-district that carries its name, one of the sub-districts of Ras al-Ayn District in Al-Hasakah Governorate, according to the administrative boundaries dataset maintained by OCHA's Field Information Services Section. It sits on the open plain between the town of Ras al-Ayn to the west and the valley of the Zarqan, a tributary of the Khabur, and it serves as the market and service centre for the cluster of villages that make up the sub-district.

What defines Abu Rasin is farming rather than industry: it lies inside the north-eastern grain belt, where rain-fed cereals, field crops and livestock form the backbone of household income. FAO and OCHA noted in January 2020 that wheat production is vital to the country's food security and plays a key role in stabilising communities in the north-east, which places the recovery of a farming centre such as Abu Rasin in a wider economic frame than its own size suggests.

The documented record for Abu Rasin itself is thin. In its situation report No. 30 of August 2021, OCHA reported that events in the town of Abu Rasin, in the eastern countryside of Ras al-Ayn, displaced some 420 families towards the city of Al-Hasakah. That figure is the only area-specific quantity we were able to confirm word for word in an institutional source.

No building-level damage assessment covering Abu Rasin or its sub-district has been published by the institutions we consulted, and no housing, infrastructure or agricultural loss percentage exists for it at sub-district resolution. Governorate-level figures for Al-Hasakah cannot stand in for the town: the sub-district is a fraction of the governorate, and applying the larger number to the smaller place would misstate both.

On the recovery side, the documented work is likewise at governorate scale rather than town scale. FAO and OCHA announced in January 2020 that they were supporting 9,400 vulnerable farmers across Al-Hasakah and Ar-Raqqa governorates with agricultural inputs to improve wheat production — a programme that covers the governorate containing Abu Rasin, not the sub-district specifically. A dedicated reconstruction or recovery record for Abu Rasin remains to be published.
